SOS Tierra

Hace 4,570 millones de años nací, producto de una gran explosión. Al mismo tiempo nació todo el Sistema Solar en el que vivo. Dentro de éste Sistema está mi amigo el Sol, mis 8 hermanos, los planetas, mi prima la luna y muchas estrellas.

Mi corazón es muy caliente, y se encuentra en la parte central de mi cuerpo. Estoy conformado por diferentes capas terrestres y por diferentes capas atmosféricas.
Las capas terrestres son todo lo que está debajo de tus pies, formadas por tierra, minerales, rocas, etc…
Las capas atmosféricas es lo que conoces como el aire; éstas capas están formadas de diferentes gases como el nitrógeno, el oxígeno, el vapor de agua, etc…

A través de los siglos he observado como todas las plantas y todos los animales han nacido, crecido y evolucionado. Tanta es la belleza que puede vivir en mi cuerpo, que gustoso he permitido que vivan libremente dentro de mí; desafortunadamente por descuido del ser humano tengo algunos años enfermo. Me comenzó una calentura que ha ido incrementándose poco a poco.

Mi doctor me dijo que mi atmósfera (aire) estaba siendo contaminada. Me explicó que la principal razón de mi enfermedad son las fábricas que producen la energía, como la luz, y los gases que salen de los autos, bióxido de carbono. Estos gases se han ido acumulando poco a poco en el aire y han ido formando una capa cada vez más gruesa. Ésta capa atrapa los rayos del sol y van provocando un calentamiento en la atmósfera. Ésta enfermedad es conocida como el calentamiento global y ¡es mortal!

Para poder salvarme necesito de su ayuda, y estas son algunas cosas que podrías hacer por mí:
Utilizar menos los autos, recuérdale a tus papás, tíos, primos y a todos los adultos que conoces que no utilicen sus autos todo el tiempo, diles que siempre es más divertido caminar y pasear que estar atrapado en medio del tráfico.
Cuidar la luz. No dejes prendidas las luces, la televisión y todo lo que utilice electricidad.
Cuidar el agua. No dejes llaves abiertas por donde se pierda el agua, no juegues con ella, no la desperdicies.

Acércate con tu maestro en la escuela y pregúntale qué más puedes hacer para cuidarme. Recuerda que vives dentro de mí, ¡yo soy todo lo que te rodea! Manos a la obra, aún estamos a tiempo.

Amor que sana

Mi nombre es “La Campechana”, me nombran así por que fue en Campeche donde me encontraron. Debo decir que mi vida había sido muy feliz hasta que tuve el accidente.

Un día iba nadando muy contenta por aguas cercanas a las playas de Campeche, de repente un gran barco pasó y me golpeó. Lo único que recuerdo de ese momento es me empecé a ver todo oscuro, y no pude mantener mis aletas moviéndose para nadar.

Cuando recobré el conocimiento me encontraba en la cajuela de una camioneta que iba a toda velocidad por una carretera muy larga. Cuando la camioneta se detuvo estábamos rodeados de muchas plantas y árboles, entendí que estaba en medio de la selva.

Yo intentaba ver todo, pero no veía nada con mi ojo izquierdo, me dolía mucho. Una mujer vestida de blanco se me acercó, me miro y tocó mi cabeza y mi ojo, yo solo sentía frío y ganas de dormir.

Después me llevaron dentro de las instalaciones del acuario de Xcaret, un parque muy grande que está en medio de la selva. Me pusieron dentro de un lugar lleno de agua de mar.

Todos los días la misma mujer que me recibió iba a cuidarme y a curarme mis heridas, algunas veces venia sola y otras acompañada por gente muy buena que me daba cuidados y cariño. Después de 45 días de estar ahí, mi ojo izquierdo volvió a ver, y mi cabeza ya no me dolía.

Fue entonces que me llevaron a una hermosa laguna donde viven otras tortugas, fue muy divertido conocerlas y hacer nuevas amigas. Día a día me sentía más fuerte, mis aletas volvieron a tener su fuerza y podía nadar como antes. Pero no había día que no recordara lo feliz que era viviendo en el mar azul.

Después de varios meses, la misma mujer que estuvo cerca durante mi estancia en Xcaret llegó acompañada de varios hombres y me subieron a una pequeña lancha. Ya que estábamos en mar abierto, los hombres me cargaron y me devolvieron al mar azul. Ese día me sentí feliz de volver a mi hogar. Siempre estaré agradecida por el amor y los cuidados que recibí, por los cuales pude sobrevivir y volver al mar.

"La Campechana"

Dentro de Xcaret buscamos el bienestar de nuestros visitantes, algunas veces no son turistas que vienen a divertirse, en muchas ocasiones son animalitos que necesitan ayuda. En Xcaret abrimos nuestros corazones a los animales que se encuentran en condiciones precarias, ofreciéndoles cobijo, cuidados y amor.

En esta ocasión fue la tarea del área de tortugas del acuario del parque Xcaret el salvar la vida de uno de ellos: “La campechana”, una tortuga herida en su ambiente natural por la proa de un barco. Bajo una especial petición de PROFEPA Delegación Campeche fue trasladada a Xcaret como un acto desesperado por salvar la vida del animal.

“La Campechana” ingresó al parque presentando fracturas múltiples de cráneo y una úlcera en la córnea del ojo izquierdo que le impedía ver. Fue así que se sometió a varias cirugías manteniendo su alimentación solo con suero.

Durante 3 meses se le hicieron curaciones diarias en la cabeza y el ojo utilizando miel de abeja. Esta técnica es parte de un tratamiento experimental que ha probado ser muy exitoso en el acuario Xcaret.

A los 45 días la Campechana había recuperado la vista y sus heridas en el cráneo habían cerrado. Cuando sus lesiones habían sido curadas por completo comenzó el periodo de rehabilitación en la laguna de tortugas que se encuentra dentro de las instalaciones del parque.

Todo este largo proceso por el cual la querida Campechana pasó, la ayudó a recuperar sus habilidades naturales, como el alimentarse por medio de búsqueda de alimento, su readaptación al medio ambiente y los movimientos necesarios para nadar, bucear y navegar de nuevo.

El pasado 20 de diciembre del 2006, “La Campechana” fue liberada exitosamente. Sentimos un profundo orgullo y agradecimiento por el esfuerzo integral que el área de tortugas del acuario proporcionó para lograr salvar y rehabilitar a este hermoso animal.

Saving Primate Bryan

In December 2006 a chimpanzee was rescued by the Animal Protection Society of Cancun in Mexico and was taken to Xcaret Park, where a group pf specialists took care of it and helped it get well. Then, it was transferred to the reserve of Monkey World in England where after a process of readjustment to its natural environment it will be released as part of the program of animal protection of Xcaret park.

Bryan, the chimpanzee, was introduced into Mexico in 2003, by a man who took it to the city of Cancun where he was expecting to make some money with the animal, but fortunately, the Animal Protection Society of this city noticed the bad conditions and treatment that the chimpanzee was suffering and initiated the rescue process.

In July 2005 Bryan was confiscated by the PROFEPA and the Animal Protection Society. This process was difficult both, for the animal and for the people involved, since the man who had it wouldn’t cooperate.

Xcaret opened its doors to Bryan offering him home, food and care. Promotion was never made of this event since Xcaret only promotes species that are endemic to the zone. Bryan entered Xcaret as part of a program of protection to species in precarious situations, in which it takes full responsibility of its house, health and food.

Monkey World is a reserve of chimpanzees located in England where they offer Bryan home and a new life, rights that were denied to him since he was just a baby.
Bryan will be the chimpanzee number 60 in this reserve and will go through a quarantine process before integrating him to the group of chimpanzees of this amazing place.

Gloria Frasier, Honorary President of the Animal Protection Society of Cancun, Mexico, said during the works to transfer Bryan: “We have been working for more than one year with the valuable aid of Sara Rincón Gallardo, who works locally in Cancun; with her help and that of the people in the U.S. we have found a sanctuary in England interested enough in Bryan. In Xcaret, Bryan had the best experience that he could have. Xcaret has behaved wonderfully, they took care of Bryan incredibly, they are very compassionate and good people, we are so thankful, we wish there was a way to pay what they’ve done. For Xcaret it has not been easy to have this little animal, he has been expensive, nevertheless they have done it with all quality and love.”

Jim Cronin, director of Monkey World explained “Sara Ricón Gallardo, who runs an excellent organization for the protection of wildlife in Cancun, Gloria Frasier, and my wife, Allison Cronin, worked together during the last 18 months, doing all the paper work and dealing with a lot of bureaucracy, both English and Mexican, however everyone was satisfied in the end and agreed to make the transfer. It took long time, everybody was very patient, and most important, in Monkey World we all know that Bryan spent the last 18 months under the good care of Xcaret.”

Jim Cronin said that a new family is waiting for Bryan; 8 chimpanzees among who ther is Sally, who always adopts all the babies. He will have an ant, sisters and brothers. In time, Bryan will be able to enjoy Monkey World installations.

When we ask his opinion about the conditions and care that Bryan received in Xcaret, Jim Cronin answered: “I think Bryan couldn’t be in a better place. We have worked with many organizations but Xcaret is the most professional we have treated with. We are really happy. We can notice that Bryan was very well fed, they really took care of him and above all, it seems to me that everybody there loves Bryan. It is important to say that Xcaret doesn’t exhibit chimpanzees, it only exhibits Mexican fauna and culture. We are very happy that this Animal Protection Program exists, that Bryan was happy and healthy thanks to the professionalism of Xcaret, and that we can give him a family from here to the next 40 years. Bryan will not be sent back to the wild life, which is disappearing little by little due to the human settlings, also the shelters in Africa are full.

Efraín Ríos, manager of the Sustainable Development department of Xcaret, thinks that when a civil association (Animal Protection Society), a private enterprise (Xcaret Park) and the government work all together for the same cause, very interesting things can be achieved.

For his part, Carlos Torres, leader of the team who took care of Bryan, commented that Bryan arrived to the park without using sedation, and that he behaved formidably. He feels very satisfied with Bryan and proud of his own team, who did a great job taking care of him. They didn’t need to use any drugs with Bryan, they just tried to interact with him to avoid aberrant attitudes.

Monkey World began 20 years ago helping the government stop the importation of primates who were used as attractions. They have been working with 15 different countries that want to stop this kind of smuggling. Monkey World is a park of 40 hectares opened to the public and receives 500.000 visitors every year. Is is through this visits that they obtain the resources for their operation.

We are sure that these actions will help this endangered species, and it is a tangible proof of the support and love that we can offer to the abused animals.
